Austria Backyard Ultra on one of the
most beautiful routes in Austria
The Backyard Ultra mode is very simple.
Every hour the runners start a 6.706 km (=4.167 miles) long course. You have exactly one hour to do this. If you don't finish the round on time and don't start again, you're out!
No late start! Very easy! ;-)
The event runs until there is only 1 runner left on the course. => open end
The race takes place according to the official Backyard Ultra regulations of the American original.
What can you expect in Kirchschlag near Linz:
For the first time in Kirchschlag, the mountain village near Linz at approx. 900m above sea level, the route runs mostly on forest floor and gravel paths and is around 150m high. It is therefore not the flattest, but also not the steepest route in Austria and offers a varied surface with gradients and inclines that are very pleasant to run (and also walk/relax), as well as a unique backdrop.
Although approx. 80% of the route is in the forest (which is a great (temperature) advantage in August in addition to the altitude), you can enjoy both sunrise and sunset.
Especially at the start and finish along the Sonnenweg (nomen est omen) you can enjoy the unique atmosphere in one of the sunniest places in Austria.
You can also admire the entire Alpine chain in all its glory at several points on every lap. You can see from the Ötscher, over the Dachstein to the last foothills and the western Mühlviertel.
You are guaranteed to get your money's worth in the "far north" and can look forward to a unique running experience in a stunning setting and great atmosphere.

Route
From the center of Kirchschlager, the route starts with a small ascent on asphalt in the direction of Breitenstein, before plunging into the beautiful and peaceful Schauerwald forest, where about 80% of the route runs. At first, the route descends pleasantly, partly hilly, on forest and gravel paths to the lowest point of the route at 805m, and then back through the forest towards the center of the village. The last part of the route towards the finish is asphalted again, but here you can enjoy the sunset and a breathtaking view of the Alps before being cheered on again at the finish.

organizational
-
The route is sufficiently marked and secured by marshals. After 10 laps at the latest, you will know the way blind anyway.
-
The route is mostly on forest paths, mostly gravel, only short sections on asphalt (from the start and last section to the finish), ratio approx. 80% forest, 20% asphalt.
-
Due to the altitude of 900m at the start, lower temperatures can be expected all year round, even in summer (approx. 5°C less than in the lowlands), which will of course be very accommodating in August. The route also runs mostly through a dense coniferous forest and is therefore shady and climatically pleasant.
-
In the start/finish area, participants will be given space for chairs, cool boxes, sleeping bags, etc. in the large weatherproof athletes' hall (Kirchschlag FF building yard). First come - first serve! Electricity available. No camping area for your own pavilion or tents!
-
To avoid unnecessary plastic waste in the refreshment area, each participant should bring their own drinking cup / flask / bottle as usual!
-
Sanitary facilities are available in the start-finish area.
-
The refreshment station is in the start/finish area. There is no aid station on the course.
-
We will also set up a large athletes' tent outside the hall, where there will be enough space available.
-
At the parking lot behind the community - directly next to the start-finish area - there is enough space for campers - also first come, first serve, please register by email or phone if you need a parking space.
-
The forest is a local recreation area and not a garbage dump. We move around in nature and treat the animals with respect. Inappropriate behavior in nature (especially the throwing away of garbage) will be punished with immediate disqualification.
-
The run takes place at your own risk and on your own responsibility on a route that is not cordoned off or monitored. On roads, the StVO must be followed and traffic must be observed.
-
With an altitude difference of approx. 150 meters and mostly beautiful, well runnable forest ground, there is no particular increased risk of accidents, but we still recommend that participants are sure-footed in the terrain and wear appropriate footwear.
The participant is responsible for accidents or injuries of any kind and must take out adequate insurance himself. The landowner and the organizer are not liable for this.
